What is the European CO2 allowances (EUA) ?
As part of the Kyoto agreement the EU is committed within the period 2008-2012 to reduce its CO2 emissions by 8 percent. compared to 1990 levels. Additionally, the EU has committed a further reduction of 20 percent. towards 2020.
One of the measures the EU has done to achieve the objective, os creating the CO2 quota system (EUA), which all larger and energy-intensive companies are subject to follow. One CO2 quota gives a company the right to emit 1 tonne of CO2. In Denmark the CO2 emissions are controlled by the Danish Energy Agency and the European Commission, which controls how many allowances to be issued in total across the EU.
It is possible for companies to trade with CO2 quotas within the EU. This means that if a company can reduce its CO2 emissions sufficiently, then it must pay others to do so. For companies that have achieved targets of CO2 reduction, the system ensures that it remains viable to reduce further. The reason is that if a company has excess allowances, as a result of achieving reductions in CO2 emissions, so these can be sold.
What does it mean to cancel the CO2 allowances ?
www.Ingenco2.dk is buying CO2 allowances from the Danish energy companies and then get them canceled and verified at National Energy Agency, so there will be fewer allowances available to the firms covered by the legislation. This means that these companies will be forced to reduce their CO2 emissions, to meet the requirements of the Kyoto agreement.
This assures us that the total CO2 emissions will be reduced.
